The ultimate purpose of a pocket holster is to keep a small pistol or revolver secure while carried in the pocket of the shooter's trousers while at the same time remaining in the pocket when the gun is drawn.
Lou Alessi designed his pocket holster with the rough side of the leather out and the smooth side in. This increases the surface friction of the holster by a factor of 10 which is why the Alessi Pocket Holster is known for it's real-world reliability in crisis situations. The design is not fancy, but it works and that's what really matters.
This holster can be either the right pocket or the left. Drawing the pistol simply requires that the gun be drawn toward the back edge of the pocket and out. In addition to the friction from the leather's rough surface, the edge of the pocket holster catches the pocket and keeps the gun upright and in proper position until it's withdrawn and allows for a full grip on gun while in the pocket.
The Lou Alessi Pocket Holster is molded specifically to individual gun models. As large guns don't seem to fit well in the pocket these holsters are made for small to medium size pistols and revolvers. One-piece and two-piece variants are currently both in production for various gun frame setups.
