Galco Holsters was founded in 1969 in (strangely enough) Chicago, Illinois, one of the most anti-handgun places in the country. Early success was due in part to founder Richard Gallagher's innovative use of horse-hide to create long-lasting holsters. Horse-hide holsters became such a defining feature of the company that it was soon dubbed "The Original Jackass Leather Company" in tribute.
In the early years the company experienced phenomenal growth as it added more and various holster designs to its lineup. Soon it had a full compliment of IWB holsters, belt holsters, duty holsters, shoulder holsters and more. In 1983 the company moved its headquarters to Phoenix, AZ where it continues to expand, grow, and innovate as the needs of shooters evolve over time.
The holsters themselves are rather famous as, according to the company, Galco holsters have prominently shown up in more feature films and TV show episodes than any other. The company also has a strong tie to the military and has donated hundreds of its shoulder holsters to military units worldwide.

Nothing speaks more strongly to the quality of the various Galco holsters that are offered than the simple fact that hundreds of thousands of law enforcement officers and and almost one million licensed-to-carry citizens trust their lives to Galco holsters on a day-to-day basis.
Many people feel that because "custom" leather holsters cost three times as much as a Galco holster, that the Galco product must somehow be inferior. While it is usually true that you get what you pay for, it is also true that sometimes you get a bit more.
